Mother’s Day in India has many forms, origins and ways of celebration. The concept of honoring mothers is not novel in India. The Indian society has been celebrating mother goddesses’ days since centuries. Indians celebrate Durga Puja, in the honor of mother Durga (a goddess), every year. They also celebrate the day of Kali Ma or the great mother every year with all zeal and dedication. However, these celebrations are meant to honor the religious mothers only.
We can find the traces of honoring an ordinary mother, in the festival of Pathare Prabhu. This festival is celebrated on every 19 of August. However, this is a localized celebration. Only the people of Bombay and Southern Parts of India celebrate this day. The roots of this day’s celebration go back to an ancient mother whose children could see a single birthday only. This woman’s children died out on reaching their first birthday or shortly after that. To honor the courage and to soothe her grievances people would get together every year. The Pathare Prabhu creed celebrates this day till now. The modern Mother’s Day celebration attracted attention of Indians due to the inherent theme.
The concept of celebrating one’s own mother spread like a jungle fire in India. This ethically and culturally diverse country embraced this event only because of the main idea of celebration. Indians, now celebrate Mother’s Day on every second Sunday of May. The celebration has not yet become official but has prevailed throughout country. Children gift Cards and flowers to their mothers on this day. Some advance families also go out for an honorary meal. Other’s just come out for entertainment. Some touchy girls and boys prepare special gifts for their mothers. Girls cook special dishes and desserts for their mothers. Mother’s are given a day off at least from the kitchen.
