Father’s Day is a universal day honoring fathers throughout the world. Ms. Sonora Dodd of America was the first daughter of the world, who proposed a day dedicated to fathers as a token of their endless efforts and inherent love for their children. She was listening to a Mother’s Day sermon on Mother’s day of 1909. When she came to know the roots of the celebration of this day, she immediately aimed to honor the other side of parenthood, also. She wanted a day to acknowledge the efforts of fathers, like her own. Mr. William Smart, Sonora’s father, was a military veteran. He lost his wife during the childbirth of his sixth offspring. Sonora was only sixteen at that time. She had seen her father earning livelihood for his children, taking care of house chores and bringing them up providing all facilities.
She held the first Father’s Day ceremony on the third Sunday of July, 1910. She passed through the streets of Washington in a closed carriage, containing gifts and other tokens of honor for fathers. The male members of YWCA and YMCA also walked along with her carriage, wearing red roses to honor a living father and white roses paying tribute to the dead ones. Sonora’s efforts to convert this celebration to a national holiday were met with satire and resistance from all and sundry. Congressmen were against filling the calendar with ‘meaningless’ holidays. On the other hand, trade unions were striving to cash in on the opportunity to boost their sales. Sonora was also not against commercialization of the event. She felt, t was the best way to create awareness in masses.
After grim efforts of the promoters of Father’s Day and the trade unions, President Nixon declared Father’s Day as a national holiday in USA. Since then, the day is celebrated with great enthusiasm throughout USA. Globalization carried the message to other nations also and many of them followed the suit. Today, almost fifty countries on the globe celebrate this day on third Sunday of July, together. Others which celebrate this day on other dates are also numerous. The day has changed to a three weeks festival in all of the major countries.
